# Who is Jose Sabater?

> A personal letter: where he grew up, how he got to Stockholm, and what he does when he is not working.

Dear visitor,

If you've found your way here, perhaps you're curious to know a little more about me.

I've spent most of my life moving between places. I was born to Spanish parents with an adventurous streak, and growing up meant living in Venezuela, Florida, and eventually Tenerife in the Canary Islands. I still carry the Canarian accent (apparently it's obvious the moment I speak Spanish) and a lifelong attachment to the sea.

Growing up on an island shapes you in subtle ways. Life moved at a gentler pace, winters were warm, and I was surrounded by people who never seemed too busy to stop for a conversation or a laugh. Looking back, I think that’s where I learned to be patient, easy-going, and to find joy in making other people smile.

There is also a particular stretch of Atlantic coastline that has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve spent every summer there. After living in Sweden for more than ten years, I finally learned the perfect word for it: [smultronställe](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/smultronställe). A special place that feels uniquely yours. That one is mine.

Life eventually took me away from the islands (to Madrid) and, later, all the way to Sweden, where I've now spent more than a decade. Along the way I've lived in a few different cities, met people from all over the world, and discovered that home can be more than one place.

Outside of work, I'm happiest when I'm moving. I climb regularly, hike whenever I get the chance, and spend plenty of evenings playing games online with friends scattered across different countries and time zones. I'm an extrovert by nature, I recharge around people, not away from them.

And no matter where life takes me, there seems to be one constant: if I've been away from the water for too long, I start quietly planning my return.
